The Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by a Hungarian professor Erno Rubik. The Rubik's cube has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 different possible combinations without taking off stickers or rearranging the pieces.

The Rubik's cube is made up of 3 different pieces, edges, corners, and the core.

Edges: Pieces with 2 colored sides

Corners: Pieces with 3 colored sides

Core: The core is made up of 6 arms, known as centers. These do not move, but rotate in place.

For a better idea of the workings of the cube, look at my guide for Reassembling the 3x3x3 Rubik's cube.
