How to Safely Disassemble a 5x5x5 Rubik's Cube

There are many sites which tell you how to take apart a 3x3x3 Rubik's cube (like mine), but none tell you how to safely take apart a 5x5x5 Rubik's cube. This site will tell you how to do it. Plus, after you know how to do it, it is very easy to take apart. If your cube is already disassembled and you don't know how to put it back together, click here.

Step one: Take out a 2x2x5 block of pieces If you read my site on how to take apart a 3x3x3 Rubik's cube, you know that you turn the top side a half turn. Pick a side and put it on top. Turn the top two layers a half turn so that the middle if the two layers is in the center of the edge piece below them.

This cube is so large that it is a piece of cake to take apart. Note: Be ready because 18 pieces are about to fall out of the cube. Put you thumb or other finger between the middle of the two layers and the edge piece and lift up. This may take a couple of tries, but it is safe and easy.

If you did it right, you will now have 18 pieces on the table in one large mess. The rest of the cube is so easy to take apart, that it needs no explaination. So, I can take it apart, now what? Check out Ton's Building Corner for some great cube modifying ideas.
